IDP Session Two: CHARACTERISTICS OF A DISCIPLE

Goal: 

Each Church will have a plan to build relationships and pathways to Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World.

Session Objectives:

• Identify the characteristics of a disciple (DISCIPLE acrostic page & scripture activity)
• Identify the characteristics of a disciple in your church on the Intentional Disciple Making Plan Stages of Development Chart -(draft form for homework)

 (SOD Chart) - Stages of Development Chart.

• Identify the traits of a mature disciple

Essential Understandings:

United Methodist Church Mission: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Disciple:

A disciple is a witness to Jesus Christ, who continues to be transformed by the grace of God, engages in life-long practices pf learning and spiritual formation to follow Jesus with acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, boldly connecting with the world around them to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ with urgency and love for the transformation of the world.

Essential Vocabulary:

Characteristics- qualities or traits of a disciple as identified in scripture and our experience of other disciples.

Stages of Development- Levels or steps along the journey to becoming a mature disciple.

Mature – advanced, someone who lives the characteristics identified.
